Chapter 5

“You do?”

He nodded, looking adorably uncertain.

“You mean you want to see me naked again, right?” She could get onboard with that.

“No… I mean, yes, of course I do, but that’s not all I want. For some strange reason, I like you.” This was said with a twinkle of amusement in those sexy hazel eyes.

“Ha! What’s wrong with you? No one likes me, and I like it that way.”

“Your particular brand of prickliness is a turn-on to me. What can I say? I must be a masochist.”

“You certainly are.”

“So… You want to see me again, too?”

“Maybe.”

“Ouch.”

“Ohhh, sorry, did I injure your proud male ego by being noncommittal? I bet that doesn’t happen very often.”

“You wound me, Sam. You really do.”

“Just trying to keep you humble.” She hesitated, glancing at him to find he was watching her closely. “You’re a nice guy. A really nice guy.”

Wincing, he said, “Double ouch.”

“No, really,” she said, laughing. “I mean that sincerely. And let me tell you, with the element I deal with at work, nice is a very good thing.”

“I suppose I should take the props where I can find them with you. Something tells me you’re not very free with the compliments.”

If he hadn’t been holding her so close to him, Sam might’ve squirmed from the way he read her so accurately. “The thing is… I don’t do the whole boyfriend-girlfriend thing. I don’t have time for a relationship. I work all the time.”

“All work and no play will make Sam a very dull girl.”

“Indeed it does.”

“For what it’s worth, I’m busy as hell, too. In fact, I’m leaving the day after tomorrow—or I guess it’s today now—for a four-week trip to Europe with the congressman.”

“Four weeks in Europe,” Sam said with a sigh. “Sounds like hell.”

“It would be for someone who considers Northern Virginia a foreign country.”

“Crossing the Potomac is, in fact, overseas, but since you have DC in your initials, I won’t hold the Northern Virginia thing against you.”

When he laughed, Sam discovered she’d only scratched the surface of his supreme sexiness. That deep laugh opened up a whole new frontier.

“That’s very kind of you. Truth is, I was rather looking forward to the trip until this incredibly sexy woman had beer spilled all over her, and I had no choice but to come to her rescue. Now four weeks in Europe is looking rather… boring.”

“You give good compliment.”

“Why, thank you.”

“You give good everything.”

“Is that right?” He nuzzled her neck while cupping her breast, and just that quickly, Sam wanted him again. Despite the zing of desire that had her motor running as if it hadn’t been recently—and repeatedly—satisfied, she had the presence of mind to realize tomorrow would be a flat-out disaster if she didn’t get some sleep.

“I hate to say this—and I do truly hate to say it—but I have to sleep, or the District’s criminal element will have their wicked way with me tomorrow.”

His deep, dramatic sigh made her smile. “If you’re going to be that way about it…”
